Bead Blasting

Applying different polishing or metal finishing techniques prior to treatment enables us to enhance and extend our surface finishing offerings in addition to that already provided by standard sulphuric anodising. Badger Anodising (Birmingham Ltd.) specialises in bead blasting services in Birmingham, West Midlands, U.K.

Bead Blasting is the process of removing surface deposits on various metals by applying fine glass beads at high pressure using compressed air without damaging the surface. This process is usually applied to metals such as aluminium, titanium and stainless steel, as well as softer metals like silver, copper and brass. It is a type of high pressure cleaning that lessens the risk of damaging the surface compared to conventional blasting methods that involve the use of sharp particles like quartz sand.

This process leaves a very fine textured and uniform finish to components once anodised. The effects it produces are similar to that of sandpaper but with a cleaner, more even finish. It is considered a low-cost process as the beads themselves are inexpensive and the air pressure equipment can be powered the same way as pneumatic tools. It’s inexpensive and quick, and ensures that your model, pattern or tool comes out with a great surface finish minus the sandpaper, fillers or solvents.

The bead that is used is Guyson Honite which is a premium quality soda-lime glass bead, manufactured specially for impact blast finishing applications. This is one of the most efficient materials used in cleaning aluminium and other types of metals. It is a chemically inert iron free product available in a range of bead sizes and can be used for a wide variety of cleaning, finishing and Peening operations.

Applications of this kind of Abrasive Blasting

Cleaning, Peening, sheen surface finishing, general cleaning of tarnished components and Inert cleaning of sensitive surfaces such as moulds, auto parts and dies. Further applications are removing heat scale and discolouration, creating a non-reflective finish, cosmetic enhancement and hiding of surface imperfections as well as many more. While sanding processes can take hours, bead shot takes a shorter time and the process is simpler that it is able to preserve a surface’s quality without distorting it or changing its dimensions.
